On Siesta Key, October closes on one evening. On Saturday, October 31, Safe Treats runs at participating businesses across the Key from 4 to 6 p.m. That same day, online voting closes for the Chamber's Scarecrow Stroll. Mote Marine Laboratory's southwest Florida sea turtle nesting season also ends on October 31. FDOT's overnight lane closures on the Siesta Drive North Bridge are scheduled to run through the end of October as well. After that, the next big date is November 13, when the Siesta Key Crystal Classic opens at Siesta Beach.
So October is really four separate schedules that all end within a day of each other. Here's how they line up.
Four Clocks, One Finish Line
| What's running | Through | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Scarecrow Stroll displays and online voting | October 31, winner named November 2 | Participating storefronts across the Key |
| Siesta Key Safe Treats | October 31, 4 to 6 p.m. | Participating island businesses |
| Sea turtle nesting season, per Mote | October 31 | Gulf-facing beaches |
| North Bridge overnight lane closures | End of October, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. | Siesta Drive over Sarasota Bay |
Each of these runs at island scale. None of them needs a ticket, and none is aimed at visitors. Each one changes something about an ordinary day on the Key, whether that's the walk past a shop window, the drive home after dinner, or the view of the beach at night.
The Scarecrow Stroll Runs at Storefront Scale
The Siesta Key Chamber's Scarecrow Stroll runs all through October during each participating business's regular hours. The Chamber describes the displays as handmade by local businesses and spread across the Key. Since the displays are scattered, one walk won't cover them all. Here are some of the businesses on the Chamber's listing:
- Village Cafe, 5133 Ocean Blvd.
- Whit's Frozen Custard, 5147 Ocean Blvd.
- The Beach Club, 5151 Ocean Blvd.
- The Cottage Restaurant, 153 Avenida Messina
- Ripfire Pizza, 5218 Ocean Blvd.
- Siesta Key Oyster Bar, 5238 Ocean Blvd.
- Crescent Beach Market, 1211 Old Stickney Point Road
- Lenny'z Pizza & Island Bar, 6645 Midnight Pass Road
Most of the list sits along a few blocks of Ocean Boulevard. Crescent Beach Market and Lenny'z bring it south toward Crescent Beach and Midnight Pass Road. Voting opens October 1 and closes October 31, and the Chamber plans to name the winner on November 2. The Chamber posted this page early in the year, so it's worth checking for updates to the participant list before you set out.
Whit's is a new name on that list. The national frozen custard chain opened its first Sarasota shop at 5147 Ocean Blvd. in mid-August, about a minute's walk from The Beach Club. It's open noon to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Those late hours mean a Village stop after the beach can now run past dark.
Halloween Weekend Starts a Week Early at Turtle Beach
Before the island-wide Halloween, the south end of the Key gets its own. Sarasota County lists the 12th annual Family Fall Fest at Turtle Beach Campground, 8862 Midnight Pass Road. It starts at 1 p.m. on October 23 and ends at 11 a.m. on October 25, with family activities throughout the camping weekend. The county notes that sites are limited. The campground is also taking calls to book the Veterans Day camping weekend, November 6 to 8.
A week later, Safe Treats spreads the trick-or-treating across the island's participating businesses. The Chamber's 2026 listing sets it for Saturday, October 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. Families don't need to register. Participating businesses do. Last year's preview in Siesta Sand listed a 3 p.m. start, so plan around the 4 p.m. start on the current listing. Safe Treats ends at 6 p.m., before dark, on the last night of turtle season.
The Beach Goes Quiet Before the Season Officially Ends
Mote's nesting season runs from May 1 to October 31, and Mote posts final counts only after the season closes and its team reviews the data. The latest weekly sheet already shows the nesting winding down. In the week of September 20 to 26, Mote recorded no new nests and no new false crawls on Siesta Key. As of that week, Siesta Key's 2026 total stood at 557 nests and 1,128 false crawls.
The same sheet shows 663 Siesta Key nests in the 2025 row, so the 2026 count is running about 100 nests behind last year. The 2026 figures are partial until Mote finishes its review. Nearby keys show the same pattern on that sheet. Casey Key has the region's highest 2026 total at 2,272 nests, and Lido Key has 150. In October, the nesting season is still officially open, but the sheet shows nesting on the Key has already stopped.
The Two Bridges After Dark
The evening drive changes on November 1 as well. Here's FDOT's current schedule for both bridges, taken from the MPO's Traffic Watch for the week of September 27, 2026:
- North Bridge, Siesta Drive. Overnight lane closures run 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of October while crews work on the concrete deck and apply an epoxy overlay. They close one lane at a time and alternate sides. No weekend work is scheduled. Flaggers escort pedestrians and cyclists through the work zone. Work under the span continues weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daytime single-leaf bridge openings for electrical work are scheduled through October 16. FDOT still expects the project to be finished in late 2026.
- Stickney Point Bridge. FDOT suggests this bridge as the alternate route. It's also one of five Sarasota County movable bridges getting new Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment, including pedestrian and bicycle detection. As a result, it has intermittent nighttime lane and sidewalk closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
That means a late drive home in October can hit work zones on either bridge. FDOT says these dates can change with weather and work schedules, so check the latest weekly Traffic Watch before a late-night trip.
Leaving the Car at Home in the Village
The 77 Siesta Islander trolley makes all of this easier to reach without driving. It runs daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., connecting Siesta Key Village, Siesta Beach, South Village and Turtle Beach Park & Campground. Breeze is piloting an adjusted route that adds a stop at Avenue Milano and Ocean Boulevard, effective September 1, according to Sarasota County's route page. More changes could follow. At their August 26 meeting, county commissioners heard plans for a Breeze pilot that would take the trolley farther into the north end of the Village, a change Siesta Sand says area businesses have wanted for a long time. No start date has been announced.
Sunday mornings stay the same. The Siesta Key Farmers Market runs year-round on Sundays on Ocean Boulevard next to Beach Bazaar. A March 2026 report listed hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Earlier coverage listed a later closing time, so check October hours with the organizers before you go.
Two Quiet Weeks, Then 948 Beach Road
Once October 31 passes, the island has a quiet stretch of about two weeks. The Crystal Classic then runs at Siesta Beach, 948 Beach Road, from Friday, November 13, through Monday, November 16. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. Organizers expect more than 40,000 visitors. The festival's Vendor Village is open to the public without an admission ticket, according to the Crystal Classic's event page.
Next comes the holiday season. The Chamber's Holiday Parade and Santa Visit is set for Saturday, November 28. Free Santa photos run from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Visitor Center, 5223 Avenida Navarra. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. at Avenida del Mare and Beach Road and heads north toward the Village. Parade entries are due by 5 p.m. on November 18.
